History of Mini Splits:

To answer this question lets go back to the beginning of the ductless mini split systems.

Mitsubishi, a Japanese manufacturer, created the first ductless mini split in 1959. They needed an efficient cooling solution for Japan, where homes are close together and have thin walls.  Traditional air conditioning units were too large and noisy. So, Mitsubishi innovated a more compact and quieter solution. By eliminating the need for ductwork, taking up far less space and being much quieter than traditional air conditioner units, the ductless mini split system was born. It quicky gained popularity in Japan and Asian and later Europe.

Despite its widespread popularity in other parts of the world, mini splits did not gain widespread popularity in the U.S. until much later, as central air conditioning systems were more commonly used.

Because of this, ductless mini splits have been around for quite a while but are fairly new to the US HVAC market. They now play an important role in today's heating and cooling demands, filling a spot in the market that previously was left unattended to. Their popularity is growing and can be attributed to the fact they are highly efficient, minimally invasive to install and extremely versatile in their applications.

Advantages of a Mini Split:

Size and versatility are huge advantages of mini split systems. Another key feature is the efficiency of these units. Due to the fact that they do not use ducts, there is almost zero loss of energy. Every dollar that you spend to run a ductless heat pump goes to heating your home.

That isn't the only place mini splits excel in efficiency, the technology in use is way ahead of the rest of the industry. Using what's known as "inverter" technology, ductless mini splits precisely control the speed and output of the compressor. Communicating microprocessors ensure that the indoor unit and fans work in perfect unison with the inverter enabled compressor. All of this adds up to units that are breaking 25 SEER and saving as much as 50% on heating costs over conventional systems. Conventional systems using this technology are the ones at the very top of the price point.

Is Ductless Mini Split Right for me?

Just because ductless heat pumps work perfect for condos and small homes that are limited on space doesn't mean that's the only place they shine. We have installed many mini split systems that replaced central ducted heating in both residential, and commercial locations.

Companies such as Daikin are making Ductless units that can have up to 8 indoor units on one outdoor unit, allowing us to retrofit even large central heating systems. The multiple indoor units allow you to heat or cool only the rooms you are in or use. They allow you to evenly heat your home, by placing units where you need them so no more cold basements or hot upstairs bedrooms when you don't want it.

Many older homes were made with radiant or in wall heaters that are expensive to operate. Converting these systems to a more modern way of heating and cooling, can get extremely expensive, invasive and require extensive planning. Usually, taking up closet space or running ductwork along ceilings is required. In some homes it is just impossible to get ductwork installed. Mini split systems can be hung on the side of the home taking up almost no space and an indoor head can be mounted on almost any wall.

The install process for mini split systems is also quick, simple, and in most cases less expensive. This saves us time and in turn you save money on install costs with very little disruption to your home.
